I like to incorporate something for each of the following categories:
- Frozen fruit (frozen so I don’t need to use ice)
- Fresh or frozen vegetables (carrots, beets, and baby spinach are my go-to’s)
- Milk (I usually keep soy, almond, or coconut milk on hand)
- Add-ins for protein and fat: silken tofu, hemp/flax/chia seeds, nut butter, avocado
- Add-ins for flavor (matcha green tea, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric)

Think adding vegetables to your smoothie will take away from the taste? Think again. My best tip is to work with the natural vegetable’s flavor, instead of trying to hide it. Fellow registered dietitian Marisa Moore shows how it’s done with this bright and nutritious Carrot Pineapple Smoothie. (Doesn’t it just look like a tall glass of sunshine?)
Cookie dough for breakfast? You’re not dreaming. This Cookie Dough Smoothie Bowl by RD Julie Harrington may look and sound like dessert, but it’s also packed with satisfying protein and fats, so you’ll feel energized longer.
Anyone else ogling over all the hot pink smoothies and smoothie bowls on Instagram lately? You can thank the dragon fruit, which Aggie Goodman used in this hydrating smoothie recipe. I’m a sucker for bright colored smoothies, so I’m over here dying to try this one next!
Is it time for all things pumpkin yet? I love the idea of serving up smoothies in a big bowl with lots of healthy toppings, and this Pumpkin Fig Smoothie Bowl by Karman Meyer is perfect for the late-summer/early-fall season. (For lunch, I’ve been loving fresh figs in this easy Grilled Fig Quinoa Salad.)
With antioxidant-rich wild blueberries and turmeric, this smoothie by Kara Lydon will keep your immune system strong through cold and flu season. I love the sweet and spicy flavors in this smoothie recipe! (Looking for more ways to eat turmeric at breakfast? Try Golden Milk Yogurt Parfaits.)
